studio days

I know its been a while since my last post but that doesn't mean I haven't been painting. Though work has picked up I still manage to squeeze in a few studios days a week. Ashley and I moved our wall around to open up the studio space, and you can feel the difference. There's such a good vibe at Space Race, the positive energy is soaring, mostly because it's being worked in.

I've been working on a new painting of the Moon's chemical elements.

Here is a quick peek at what's coming. this unfinished paining still has a lot of work to be done!

and here's a few studio shots of ashley and I.

Until next time.

New Painting!

After a long month of work I've finally finished this painting, a coded system I've developed that depicts the Chemical Elements in human teeth. The painting will be in the group show "That Bites" at Pageant Gallery on 6th and Bainbridge st. Philadelphia PA. on August 14th from 6-9. All the works will be auctioned off the night of the show, to raise money for oral surgery and Give Back a smile Charity. Come out to support a good cause and enjoy a night of art, music and drinks from the Philadelphia Brewing Company.

Artist Statement

My paintings are visual data that provide a glimpse of the fundamental microscopic structures of the universe. Scientific laws are studied and interpreted to create a system that transforms numeric information into visual data. By studying the Periodic Table I have developed a coding system that represents each Chemical Element in order to make vivid, diagrammatic works of the elemental composition of the human body in relation to the cosmos. My concept is to create a visual system, which functions as a symbolic representation of the elements shared between our body and the universe. This system was created to show humanity’s atomic connection to the cosmic cycle of life, death, and rebirth; and to find a metaphoric connection between our existence and the existence of the universe.

Welcome to Space Race Studios!

We have lift off! The past few weeks in the studio have been very exciting. For one, we settled on a name with some help from our good friend Ian. Juniper Space Race Studios! We also finally got our walls up and it's quite a transformation. Since there is only 3 of us in the space and not four like expected we made each studio bigger 12' X 15'! Check out the before and after pictures.

2 jobs and a new studio = a very very busy me

I always thought after I graduated I would have some time to finally relax... I was very wrong. I don't mind being busy though, I'm a lot more productive these days. Though I have two part time jobs now, I still find the time to be in my studio, paint, make books, and hang out. I guess I can't complain.

Yesterday my studio mates and I bought wood and dry wall so we can finally get our studios built! We also obtained a couch and soon a mini fridge! Next on our list is to come up with a name so we can advertise shows.

Speaking of shows I'm currently working on a piece for a show in August called "That Bites" I'll post details soon.

In other news I've been making books everyday before work so I don't feel bad for not going to the studio. But I'm off for the weekend so you can bet I'll be crafting. Once I get my camera working I'll post some pictures. that is if my internet doesn't cut out again.
... Mercury must be in retrograde.

Art For the Cash Poor

Today I volunteered at the Art for the Cash Poor event at the Crane Arts Building in Philadelphia.
Ashley and I ran a booth selling contemporary sculptures for Cereal Art. There were tons of art, food and music all day. If you didn't get the chance to get out there today the event will continue tomorrow from 1pm to 6pm at the Crane Arts Building on 1400 N. American St, Studio 314.  There is no cover charge but I would bring cash if I were you. There is so much great stuff for affordable prices that you might just have to have.

The Art of Mathematics

A friend sent me this link about The Art of Mathematics. This is very similar to the paintings i've been doing.
though my work is more science based then math it all seems relative to me. My work focusses on developing visual systems for scientific numeric information.

New Studio

This is not the end but simply the beginning. Painting class of 2009 I love these guys and gals.

Today I signed the lease for a garage that will become my new art studio. I'll be moving in next week with my good friend and studio mate Ashley and hopefully 2 others.  We have lots of work to do and some walls to build. I'm excited for the new summer project along with finding another job. I can't wait to get back in the studio.

A Few Changes

Though I've been lacking on updates, it's seems just the opposite in the studio. I just finished my Senior Thesis and Exhibition and I already have new projects lined up. I'm also looking for artists to split a studio with. With graduation ahead there is much to and I'm very excited to get back to work.  This week I am planing the Senior Painting group exhibition, which should be May 18th through the 22nd. Next week I'll be moving out of my studio and hopefully into a larger space. After that I will continue to paint and try to find a more consistent job.

more updates ahead: I'll be posting pictures of my senior thesis exhibition soon.
